LUNAFEST is a film festival of award-winning short films by, for and about women. This season, the program of nine films – filled with stories of reflection, hope and humor – comes to El Cerrito High's Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 21, 2015.
Jeanne Rizzo, RN, the inspiring President and CEO of the Breast Cancer Fund, Lunafest’s primary beneficiary, will give the welcome. Ms. Rizzo guided the Breast Cancer Fund to adopt its bold mission to work to prevent breast cancer by eliminating our exposure to toxic chemicals and radiation linked to the disease. Under her direction, the organization has become a national leader in translating the science linking breast cancer and environmental exposures into public education and advocacy campaigns that protect our health and reduce breast cancer risk.
After Ms. Rizzo’s welcome, guest filmmakers Emily Fraser and Katherine Gorringe will discuss in an on-stage interview the making of their Lunafest-selected film, Lady Parts, about a woman-owned auto repair shop in Redwood City.
The film showing will be preceded by a VIP reception at a local residence - a short walk from the theater – and will feature a selection of delicious hors d’oevres created by celebrated personal chef Sirona Skinner Nixon (formerly of Bay Wolf and Camino), local wines from Grey Fox Vineyards, and beers from Lagunitas Brewing Company and Trumer Pils.
An opportunity to chat with the talented filmmakers, enjoy desserts from Braxton’s Boxes and complimentary coffee from Well Grounded Coffee Shop will follow after the films in the lobby.
A raffle will also accompany the event, where several coveted prizes will be raffled off to raise additional funds for the beneficiary causes, including a GoPro HERO3 video camera.
About LUNAFEST East Bay:
The LUNAFEST East Bay Committee, a diverse group of women that come together from Oakland to Richmond and span a variety of ages, careers and interests, presents LUNAFEST locally. The group is united by a commitment to raise awareness about breast cancer and women’s issues in the community. Chaired by longtime El Cerrito resident Joann Steck-Bayat, the committee was honored by LUNA® at the 2013 LUNAFEST World Premiere for their hard work and dedication to bringing LUNAFEST to their community and for raising nearly $50,000 for the Breast Cancer Fund. The committee was also honored to be a part of the selection panel for this year’s LUNAFEST films.
