Location: Mt. San Jacinto
Palm Springs, CA

For more information or to sign up, please contact Gwen Walden at gwenwalden@gmail.com

Please join the Cactus to Clouds Challenge on San Jacinto Peak in Palm Springs hosted by Carol Porter and Gwen Walden. The Cactus to Clouds Trail from Palm Springs to San Jacinto Peak has the greatest elevation gain of any trail in the United States. Also known as the Skyline Trail, it climbs 8000 feet from the desert to Long Valley, then joins with the main trail to gain another 2600 feet to the summit.

Get in shape! You need to be in excellent shape, so this hike makes a great training goal. You’ll want to do strength training, cardio interval training, trail running and hiking. Carol Porter will provide a detailed program and work individually with anyone interested.

Itinerary: Option 1, Full Hike

  • Leader of the Hike: Carol Porter, personal trainer and Breast Cancer Fund supporter. Find out more about Carol here
  • Max participants - 6
  • Costs: All travel and lodging paid by participant and a minimum fundraising goal of $500 per person.
  • Friday 10/17: Arrive in Palm Springs, group dinner and meeting regarding gear, logistics etc.
  • Saturday 10/18: The team will start the hike at 3am to beat the heat of the lower elevation and ensure that they have enough day light to summit by noon at the latest. After the summit, we begin our descent back to the tram to catch a ride back down. (We will then drive back to hotel for a celebration dinner.)
  • Mt. San Jacinto is a strenuous hike! It has the most elevation gain of any trail in the United States. Average hiking time from the tram to the peak is 2½ hours each way, so the entire "cactus to clouds" hike takes about 11 to 16 hours to travel 23 miles with 10,700 feet of climbing and 2,700 feet of descent.

 Itinerary: Option 2, Partial Hike

  • Leader of the Hike: Carol Porter, personal trainer and Breast Cancer Fund supporter. Find out more about Carol here
  • Max participants - Unlimited number of participants
  • Costs: All travel and lodging paid by participant and a minimum fundraising goal of $500 per person.
  • Friday 10/17: Arrive in Palm Springs, group dinner and meeting regarding gear, logistics etc.
