During Climb week, you will stay at Mount Shasta Resort with the team and Breast Cancer Fund staff. Many climbers also have supporters join them in Mt. Shasta for all or part of the week.
We have included a sample itinerary here to give you an idea of the activities during Climb week that you can expect to participate in.
Saturday, June 18—Snow School
Snow school with Shasta Mountain Guides – climbers who are unable to take part in snow school prior to the week of Climb are required to take this course. If you choose to take the snow school class before this week through another mountaineering group or with the Shasta Mountain Guides, this day is optional.
Sunday, June 19—Travel to Mt. Shasta
You’ll arrive in the early evening, meet the Breast Cancer Fund staff, the full Climb Against the Odds team and enjoy a special opening ceremony.
Monday, June 20—Photo shoot and gear check with guides
The team will participate in a short photo shoot in the morning, followed by a gear check where you will meet your mountain guides. Your guides will make sure you have all the right equipment for your climb and answer any questions about gear, food, water, the summit attempt, etc. That afternoon, you will have time to relax and get focused for our big day, and get any last-minute items you need for the climb.
Tuesday, June 21—Hike to base camp
Hike from Bunny Flat trailhead to Horse Camp for lunch. Hike to Hidden Valley and establish base camp, review mountaineering techniques, have dinner and go to bed early.
Wednesday, June 22—Summit attempt
The team will wake around 1 a.m., eat breakfast and depart in rope teams of five climbers plus guides for the summit attempt via Mt. Shasta's west face. This is a long, full-day attempt, which will take from 12 to 16 hours round-trip. That evening will be spent back at base camp to relax…and celebrate!
Thursday, June 23—Return to civilization
After breaking camp and hiking down to Horse Camp, you will enjoy a volunteer-organized pancake breakfast. You will then hike down to the Bunny Flat trailhead to be welcomed by family, friends and Breast Cancer Fund staff and have lunch. You will have the afternoon to yourself, and the team will gather again for a community celebration dinner with loved ones, staff from the Breast Cancer Fund and Shasta Mountain Guides, volunteers and many members of the Mt. Shasta community who support Climb Against the Odds.
Friday, June 24—Climb debrief
A debrief to discuss what the Climb Against the Odds Experience has meant to each climber will happen after breakfast. We will have a farewell lunch together, and those departing for home can do so after lunch.
